Just as CPR training helps a layperson with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis until appropriate professional help arrives.

MHFA is an 8-hour certification course. Completion of the course earns a three-year certification. The adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help an adult person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. Topics covered include suicide prevention and first aid around anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions.
