Description

This 3-hour, self-paced course is designed to increase psychiatrists’ knowledge of and confidence in the identification and management of diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors among their patients with serious mental illness.



Based on a Population Management approach, this 3-module course will provide strategies to identify care gaps and stratify risks related to diabetes in a population with serious mental illness; address prevention of diabetes through strategies to support health behavior change that are feasible in specialty mental health settings; and describe treatment options for Type 2 diabetes, including goals of diabetes care for patients with serious mental illness.

This course is presented in three modules by:

Dr Lydia Chwastiak, a Psychiatrist and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is also a Co-Director of the Northwest Mental Health Technology Transfer Center.
Dr Martha Ward, a Psychiatrist and Internal Medicine Physician, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Internal Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine.
Dr Alyson Myers, a Pyschiatrist and Endochronolgist. She is a Clinical Educator and Medical Director of Inpatient Diabetes at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. She also is an Assistant Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

This online course was created by the Northwest Region 10 Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) with support from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Physicians, physician assistants, primary care ARNPs, psychologists, and other health care providers may be eligible for CME or CEUs for completing the course.
