Target Audience: Clinical Supervisors of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Programs

This six-month long full immersion program in clinical supervision is intended to introduce participants to a model of supervision, familiarize participants with competency based counselor skill development, prepare participants to be highly qualified clinical supervisors, and meet state guidelines for being an approved supervisor.

Please register for both the CS I and CS II.

Clinical Supervision I Immersion Series: Developing Counselor Skills

These virtual training days are experiential education workshops. Topics include the following: importance of having a supervision model to work from, providing feedback, and guiding the development of individual professional development plans. The virtual trainings include didactic components, skills training; skills practice exercises and small group learning activities.

These (4) one-hour online learning collaborative meetings will occur virtually and be split into small groups of 6 to 10 participants. The trainer will review the materials from the virtual training and discuss with participants how to incorporate these skills and practices into their work. Exact times for the one-hour sessions to be determined and shared during the initial training. Participants must attend at least three follow up meetings in order to receive their CEUs.

Clinical Supervision II Immersion Series: Managing Supervisory Dilemmas

The second phase of the training in clinical supervision for behavioral health providers focuses on dilemmas clinical supervisors face and how to implement CS skills learned in the first phase into practice. CS 2 is designed to further increase supervisors’ understanding and skill in assessing counselors in mental health and substance use disorder treatment setting. This training will emphasize how to handle problems, which may arise in the supervision process. It also emphasizes the importance of creating structure, collaborative teaching and mentoring, and builds on skills in risk management and setting boundaries as a supervisor.

One-hour follow-up sessions will be offered every two weeks following the one-day virtual CS 2 training in October. The focus of the learning session will be implementation of the clinical supervision model and skills covered in CS 1 and CS 2. Exact times for the one-hour sessions to be determined and shared during the initial training. Participants must attend eight follow-up meetings in order to receive their CEUs.

These individual sessions are intended to build on the skills taught in the course by providing direct observation. They also provide an opportunity to have skills in direct observation modeled for the participants. This is completed by submitting a 20 minute sample of a supervision session to be followed by individual coaching sessions.

Paul Hunziker MA, LMFT, SUDP is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Substance Use Disorder Professional and a American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists Approved Supervisor. Paul is currently in private practice in Tacoma, Washington where he works with supervisees and clients. He has also been a clinical director and owner of a Washington State Certified Outpatient Behavioral Health treatment center located in Renton WA. Paul has been training Supervisors with the NWATTC since 2015. He has also been a Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) member since October 2014. Paul has a background in experiential education and looks to create trainings which engage participants through multiple learning styles. Paul also has been using his innovative training design ideas to create live online trainings which are highly engaging and interactive.
