Training Overview Description

This workshop will offer an overview of assessment and treatment of dissociation and complex dissociative disorders. On the first day participants will learn how to distinguish the four ways dissociation is defined in the literature, along with their different treatment implications. In addition, we will explore the specific symptom clusters of Dissociative Identity Disorder and its lesser form, Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD). Both subtle and overt presentations will be discussed. Participants will learn to distinguish between normal ego states and more complex dissociative parts, with treatment differences. We will discuss a phase-oriented approach to treating complex dissociative disorders, including what is similar and different from other psychotherapies. Participants will learn basic principles and approaches for treating clients with dissociative disorders. An integrative sequenced approach to working with dissociative parts of self will be discussed. On the second day we will explore specific and unique practical interventions in each phase that foster integration. We will identify common resistances and impasses and how to most effectively resolve them. Most importantly, participants will learn how to promote integration by working with the client as a whole, rather than as fragmented parts.
