Training Overview Description

Day 1 – Ethics, Cultural Humility and Efficacy in Work with Indigenous Populations: This training will use the Society of Indian Psychologists (SIP) Commentary on the American Psychological Association Code of Ethics to illustrate some of the pitfalls in using Western based ethics with indigenous populations. Participants will increase their knowledge of ways to incorporate information from SIP into their work with indigenous peoples. This will include recognizing non-explicit cultural biases in the practice of Western psychology and how the use of cultural humility increases culturally competent therapy.

Day 2 – Effective Cultural Adaptions of Empirically Supported Interventions: It is not unusual for practitioners in government funded agencies to be expected to use an Evidence Based Practice (EBP) that was developed in a context very different from their own. At best, this can be clumsy. At worst, it can be harmful. This training will provide participants with the knowledge they need to critically and accurately evaluate an EBP, provide and document cultural adaptations, and document the development of their own EBP to reflect how cultural context shapes psychological process and methodology.
