Training Overview Description

Clinical supervision is a mutual endeavor enhanced by a trusting-bidirectional relationship that leads to professional development and enhanced client care through mentoring, guidance, and clinical oversight (Durham, 2019).

With the goal of maintaining clinical efficiency, adherence to ethical guidelines, and protection of those most vulnerable, NAADAC presents our newest specialty online training series Clinical Supervision in the Addiction Profession.

This six-part webinar series will provide critical training on current trends and research, technology-based and evidence-based practices, and the overall structure of effective clinical supervision. In addition, this series will support NAADAC’s new Clinical Supervision: An Overview of Functions, Processes, and Methodology manual.

Those who successfully attend the full webinar series and pass all six CE quizzes for this six-part series will be eligible to apply for the Certificate of Achievement for Clinical Supervision in the Addiction Profession.

Part One: The Supervisory Relationship
The supervisory relationship is the foundation that supports the entire process of clinical supervision. There are many parallels between supervision and counseling and, as such, the supervisor can become a model to the supervisee in developing strong clinical relationships.

Part Two: Using Technology for Clinical Supervision
Technology is quickly becoming one of the biggest assets to our clinical practices. It is now widely accepted as an ethical, evidence-based method of providing clinical services, particularly in rural areas. This session will describe how technology can also be used to provide clinical supervision.

Part Three: Legal and Ethical Issues in Supervision
Clinical supervisors are obligated to maintain a thorough grasp of ethical decision-making. The purpose of this presentation is to provide guidance to clinical supervisors on how they can ensure that their supervisees obtain a complete and integrated understanding of legal and ethical issues that pertain to their role as counselors.

Part Four: Stages of Clinical Supervision
This webinar will explore three levels of counselor development while integrating characteristics of the Integrated Developmental Model of supervision. Included is the evolution of supervisee developmental criteria along with supervisory approaches that typically evolve over time to best meet the counselor’s level of development.

Part Five: How to Structure Clinical Supervision
This webinar will examine the difference between a structured and unstructured supervisory relationship and provide resources commonly used to maintain structure in clinical supervision. Instructions will also be given on how to train a supervisee to develop autonomy, how to leverage case management, and using an Individualized Development Plan (IDP).

Part Six: Motivational Interviewing in Clinical Supervision: A Parallel Process
Clinical supervision provides the most important resource available for training and oversight of evidence-based practices. This webinar will highlight concrete steps to take in implementing quality supervision with a Motivational Interviewing focus, enhancing client outcome and employee satisfaction.
