This training will introduce the key techniques of Motivational Interviewing.
Participants will integrate OARS (open ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries) in their work to motivate clients toward behavior change. The work of Brene Brown inspires the introduction of the training with brief exploration of the art and science of empathy. We will reflect on how to turn conventional casework upside down by challenging our “righting reflex” with motivational Interviewing skills.
Participants will be challenged to ask open-ended questions, give affirmations and use reflective listening during difficult interactions with people. We will explore how MI can help participants avoid some common conversation traps. Using the Transtheoretical Model, we will discuss how to motivate a person through the stages of change.
Must pre-register to attend.

Web-Conference Information. This training will be delivered as a live, interactive web-conference using Zoom. You must prepare for the webinar prior to the day of the training. Web-conference connection information is available in the CHD/AKTC e-Learning Portal after your registration is processed. To confirm your attendance and receive credit for taking the training you must be prepared to identify yourself and participate as requested during the training. You must be logged on and prepared with a camera and microphone (or a headset) prior to the start of training. You may connect by phone if necessary, but you must be able to participate verbally when requested. See further instructions in the AKTC e-Learning Portal.
Please plan to log into the Zoom web-conference 15-20 minutes before the training start time.
