Training Overview Description

Join Michael Trout live in this 6-part Zoom seminar series as he highlights how we must listen closely and wonder about the power and complexity of relationship-based practice to heal and transform. Each session awakens our curiosity about the remarkable practice of infant mental health. Mr. Trout will lead discussions of six chapters from his most recent audiobook, This Hallowed Ground: Four Decades in Infant Mental Health, which he donated to, and is exclusively available from, the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health.

Michael Trout, is a highly-regarded expert and speaker in the field of infant mental health. He received his MA in Psychology at Central Michigan University and completed specialty training in Selma Fraiberg's seminal infant mental health program at the University of Michigan. Later, Mr. Trout was awarded the 1984 Selma Fraiberg Award by the Michigan Association of Infant Mental Health in recognition of his contributions to the field.

Mr. Trout was a founding member, and is Past-President, of the Illinois Association for Infant Mental Health(ILAIMH). He has also served as a regional vice president for the World Association of Infant Mental Health. Mr. Trout has authored or co-authored numerous book chapters, journal articles, and textbooks. In the 1980s, he released a 6-hour video training series, Awakening & Growth of the Human: Studies in Infant Mental Health, which broke new ground by using film to portray infant mental health practice with families. Mr. Trout is well-known for his many 10-20 minute short films giving voice to the experiences of babies and toddlers in difficult circumstances like foster care, divorce, and domestic violence; list of these may be found here.

In 1986, Mr. Trout founded the the Infant Parent Institute in Urbana, Illinois, where he practiced clinical infant mental health for forty years. Now retired from clinical practice, Mr. Trout is a consultant, trainer, and public speaker with engagements world wide. Mr. Trout has donated his lifetime of published material, both written and filmed, to the Knowledge Center at Chaddock where it can be purchased.
