This 6 hour live online training will examine racial dynamics and principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion from the lens of Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP). Providers who are on the CPP roster, or are eligible to roster, or who are currently in a CPP training are invited to attend this interactive workshop where we will use case vignettes to address these topics. Small-group discussions will help participants to integrate historical and sociocultural trauma with treatment goals and CPP objectives. We will create a discussion space using the Courageous Conversations framework and the From Safe Space to Brave Space framework.

This training is a "stand-alone" pre-institute offering of the 36th Annual San Diego International Conference on Child & Family Maltreatment. Participants in this training are not required to register for the rest of the Conference.
The entire conference will be online this year and features 4 other full- or two-day pre-institute trainings on Saturday and Sunday January 23-24. The regular conference occurs Mon-Friday Jan 25-29 and includes dozens of workshops on a wide variety of topics, including other live or on-demand 75 minute workshops on infant and early childhood mental health. The cost of the main conference is $300 with some additional optional charges for official CEU certificates
The Conference has approval (or pending approval) from a variety of accrediting bodies for most medical and mental health providers. The Conference website has detailed information about the accreditation bodies and credits available for the pre-institute sessions and regular workshops.
This 6-hour workshop could be used to demonstrate attainment of the Competencies® toward the Endorsement® offered by the Alaska Association for Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health. Ann Chu, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF
Ann Chu is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Associate Director of Dissemination for Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) at the UCSF Child Trauma Research Program. As Associate Director of Dissemination, Dr. Chu works with the CPP Dissemination and Implementation Team to train community providers in CPP, standardize CPP training model components, and develop dissemination tools that can further the implementation of CPP. She is interested in bringing trauma-informed principles and CPP-based interventions, such as Attachment Vitamins to child serving systems such as primary care, childcare/early childhood education, and child welfare. Dr. Chu is currently working with research partners to evaluate the effectiveness of Attachment Vitamins and whether CPP works for children with exposure to specific types of trauma such as sexual abuse and traumatic bereavement. Her research to date has examined how trauma impacts vulnerable populations such as young children, youth in foster care, and survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Throughout these activities, she maintains a commitment to improving the quality of care for young children and their families. Dr. Chu received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Denver and is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in California. She has previously held a faculty position at the University of Denver and served as Program Director at A Better Way, a non-profit agency providing services to children and families involved in the child welfare system in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Chandra Ghosh Ippen, PhD, Associate Director, Child Trauma Research Program, UCSF
Dr. Ghosh Ippen is familiar to many Alaskans because she has traveled here twice to present at the annual statewide Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Institute. Most recently, she presented in Alaska on the Ripple Effect, her adaptation for early childhood of a core curriculum presenting an integrative trauma training framework, of which she was a co-developer. Dr. Ghosh Ippen is also well-known as a CPP trainer and for her children's books addressing the experiences of early childhood trauma, available on the publisher website, Pipolo Productions. She is an eloquent speaker on topics such as delivering clinical mental health services across cultures, bringing a diversity-informed lens to work with families of young children, and the intersection of culture, trauma experiences, and healing. As a first-generation East Indian/Japanese American, she is committed to examining how culture and context affect perception and mental health systems. Dr. Ghosh Ippen co-authored seminal peer-reviewed papers on CPP's efficacy, as well as the CPP manual, Don't Hit My Mommy (2015). Dr. Ghosh Ippen provides leadership in the Early Trauma Treatment Network, a consortium of sites that are dissemination centers in the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and serves as the co-chair of the Cultural Competence Consortium of the NCTSN. She is co-author of Losing a Parent to Death: Guidelines for the Treatment of Traumatic Bereavement in Infancy and Early Childhood (2003) and producer and director of Vale la Pena Recordar, a Spanish language video on childhood traumatic grief.
