Overview

Health care, early childhood, home-visiting, child-protection, and mental health providers are often on the front line when responding to the most critical needs of vulnerable and underserved families with young children, including during pregnancy. Often, these families face significant trauma and adversity in their lives.

Agencies and institutions in Alaska must support providers to practice ethically and competently with Alaska's diverse families. Reflective Supervision/Consultation (RSC) is an evidence-based practice to support direct service providers and their managers in engaging families and promoting parent-child relationships as the basis of developmental resilience. RSC fosters a reflective, resilient, trauma-engaged, diversity-informed, effective workforce.

Objectives

In this training, participants will learn:

• Characteristics of RSC and how it a unique form of supervision
• The research basis of RSC
• The benefits of RSC to families, providers, and programs
• How RSC can promote provider resilience, prevent burn-out, and help agencies retain qualified staff, thereby increasing program effectiveness.

Participants will also practice using tools to support reflective practice.

Instructor Bio

Deb Harris, LISW, holds an Endorsement as a Clinical Mentor and has provided reflective supervision/consultation to many Alaskan practitioners over the past 12 years. Hailing from New Mexico, she has traveled to Alaska multiple times to provide training in Circle of Security and Child-Parent Psychotherapy. Deb was an invited keynote speaker on infant/ toddler court team models at the 2015 Alaska statewide IECMH Institute. In 2019, Deb was awarded the William M. Schaffer, PhD, Award to Honor Excellence in Reflective Supervision Leadership & Inspiration.

Competencies® & Endorsement for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-Focused Practice Promoting Infant Mental Health®

This training will cover several competencies required for Endorsement®. AK-AIMH administers the Endorsement® to recognize the attainment of professional competencies in working with children 0-3. For more information about the Endorsement®, please visit our website.

• Nonmembers pay $75.

Funding

This event is organized by AK-AIMH's new initiative, Project Compass: Leading the Way in Infant & Early Childhood Workforce Development in Alaska. Funding for this project is provided by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, the Alaska Children's Trust, and by AK-AIMH members and donors. Southcentral Foundation's New Generation Project also provided funding to offer this course twice during early 2021.
