Ethics In Practice Specialty Online Training Series Webinars

This webinar will cover the seventh principle of the NAADAC/NCC AP Code of Ethics, Supervision and Consultation. Clinical supervision expert Thomas Durham, PhD, will join Dr. Mita Johnson, EdD, LAC, MAC, SAP, CTHP-II, and Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, BSW, NCAC II, CDC III, SAP, to discuss the ethical principles that govern clinical supervision, including topics such as informed consent, clinical crises, boundaries, gatekeepers, dual relationships, and e-supervision. After a concise review of the seventh principle, the webinar will focus on case examples to highlight common ethical dilemmas that treatment providers face in everyday practice.

Presenter

Mita M. Johnson, EdD, LAC, MAC, SAP, CTHP-II, has been practicing in the world of mental health, marriage and family, and addictions counseling for the past 30 years. She earned her Doctorate degree in counselor education and supervision and is a core faculty member in the School of Counseling program at Walden University. She has a thriving private practice where she provides telebehavioral health services, clinical supervision, counseling to our military, and addiction-specific training and education. Her areas of specialization include pharmacology, co-occurring disorders, ethics, culturally-responsive care, and clinical supervision. She has been an active member of NAADAC for the last 15 years, has served as the Ethics Chair, and began her term as the NAADAC President in October 2020.

Cynthia Moreno Tuohy, BSW, NCAC II, CDC III, SAP, is the Executive Director of NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals, and has worked as an addiction professional for 48 years. She has been a trainer in Domestic Violence/Anger Management and Conflict Resolution for over 30 years as well as an international, national and state trainer. Moreno Tuohy is also a curriculum writer in addiction screening and evaluation, counseling methods, conflict resolution, co-occurring disorders, ethics, documentation, and medicated assisted treatment and recovery, and has written articles published in national and other trade magazines. Her book, Rein in Your Brain; from Impulsivity to Thoughtful Living in Recovery was released May 2014 through Hazelden Publishers. She has served as President of NAADAC, Certification Board Commissioner, International Chair, Treasurer and Legislative Chair for NAADAC.

Thomas Durham, PhD, has been in involved in the field of addiction treatment since 1974 as a counselor, clinical supervisor, program director, and educator. Durham is semi-retired and currently provides clinical support and training to Phoenix House of New England. Until the end of 2018, he served as the NAADAC Director of Training. Durham also worked in government contracting under SAMHSA (while at JBS International) and the Department of Defense (while at Danya International). He also served as the Executive Director of The Danya Institute and Project Director of the Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center. From 2004-2017, Durham taught graduate courses in psychology as an adjunct professor at Northcentral University.

Learning Objectives

• Participants will be able to summarize the NAADAC/NCC AP Code of Ethics, Principle VII.
• Participants will be able to describe areas of frequent ethical conflict that are specific to NAADAC/NCC AP Code of Ethics, Principle VII.
• Participants will develop strategies to avoid and resolve potential ethical violations regarding NAADAC/NCC AP Code of Ethics, Principles VII.

Content Level

Beginner and Intermediate

• Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.
• Intermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.

A Certificate of Completion for 1.5 CEs is available by participating in this specialty online training and passing an online CE quiz. Those who successfully complete the full series and pass all six CE quizzes for this six-part series will be eligible to apply for the Ethics in Practice Certificate.
