Training Overview Description

The first years of life are foundational for children, and understanding and supporting early development is critical to helping infants and young children to flourish and grow. Developmental screening is used to document and monitor aspects of children’s development in order to promote greater understanding of a child’s strengths and areas for growth, as well as providing opportunities to identify children who may be at risk for developmental delays and who may benefit from further assessment and services.

The Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) and the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE-2) are developmental screening tools that utilize caregiver observations and insights to create a picture of children’s development in areas such as communication, motor, and social-emotional skills.

This introductory workshop provides an introduction to why and how to use the ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE-2. Participants will learn about the value of screening and how to engage families and help them understand the importance of their involvement in the screening process.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Administer the ASQ-3 and ASQ:SE-3, empowering caregivers as experts in this process
  • Score and interpret the results with sensitivity to children’s developmental differences and culture
  • Discuss the results with caregivers, with respect to the family’s culture and values
  • Identify and offer resources to families

Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3): Focuses on communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social competencies.
Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social-Emotional (ASQ:SE-2): Focuses on self-regulation, compliance, social-communication, adaptive functioning, autonomy, affect, and interaction with people. The ASQ:SE-2 is a critical complement to the ASQ-3, because social-emotional competencies underlie all areas of development, and using the tools together provides a more comprehensive view of a child’s development.

This introductory training is recommended for early childhood professionals directly serving infants, young children, and their families in a variety of settings such as early learning, healthcare, and early intervention.
