SBIRT is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders, as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders. Primary care centers, hospital emergency rooms, trauma centers, and other community settings provide opportunities for early intervention with at-risk substance users before more severe consequences occur.
This training will provide behavioral health practitioners with an introduction to SBIRT and a review of its components with an emphasis on the important role of behavioral health providers as partners to organizations implementing SBIRT. The presentation will also include the rationale for implementing SBIRT in diverse health care settings, the use of validated screening tools, structured approaches to conducting effective motivationally based brief interventions, and strategies for supporting successful treatment referrals.
