Training Overview Description

Workshop participants will begin to examine subtle generalizations about race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and other differences, including addiction identification and weight biases. Together, we will learn to appreciate our personal stories and model self-reflection for clients who are just beginning to understand their own.

Event-specific Details

The story we hold as true impacts the way we interact in the world. In an increasingly diverse American landscape, counselors are challenged to understand the needs of clients often without having a foundation of cultural humility necessary to create alliances and build trust. This workshop will prompt participants to explore their own stories and the underlying biases that unintentionally hinder both personal and professional relationships.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to define cultural competence and cultural humility and contrast the two models.
  • Participants will be able to identify five characteristics or beliefs that shape their personal identity.
  • Participants will be able to describe the relationship between cultural humility and therapeutic alliances in the counseling dynamic.

Content Level

Beginner.

Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.
